Dear Dr., I have a coming two year old AQHA Gelding he has, as explained to me, ocd in both hocks, one has DrOpped other is going to....he is a very nice gelding congress and world material, but still a gelding, so the money issue is in content, knowing that surgery is not alway, well most of the time not a cure for the problem, we have made the discovery of shock wave treatment, I have sent his x-rays off to illinois to see if he is a candidate for the shock wave treatment, it seems to be a little more cost effective, but I am wondering about the sure fix.......PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hello Kim, The treatments recommended depend much on the nature and location of the lesions and whether the horse is showing signs of lameness that refer to the OCD lesion. For more on this see the article on OCD (associated with this forum) and the article on Hock Lameness (» Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Overview of Diseases of the Hock (Tarsus)). I am not sure what you mean when you say the hock has DrOpped. Can you explain this better? The use of Shock Wave in equine orthopedic conditions in general and OCD in particular has not been studied in a systematic manner. Currently we have some clinical reports on some conditions but I do not see any on the use of OCD and Shockwave and would be very cautious about using this therapy mode on a joint. DrO

I will just add that I have a filly that we had bilateral ocd lesions debrided surgically and I am pleased that we did. Bip-bam-boom... done deal. Her recovering went well and she is back at full steam. I worried about the cost initially but now would not hesitate to have the surgery done on another horse should the need arise. I feel it was an investment in my future with her that has already had an excelent return.
