Hi Dr. O.,
I just found out that our seven month old filly died. She was living at a friend's place, they finally were able to get in touch with me just now.
She was playing, running, eating and happy on Tues. a.m., down in the field in the afternoon, died that night.
They had a "post-mortem" done (they guy at the rendering plant had a look-I know, I know, but it's over now and there's nothing I can do to change things) and he said she was missing the entire mucosal lining of her stomach, it looked as if someone has taken sandpaper to it. The large and small intestines were normal. There was no evidence of worms.
Feed history: free access good quality hay, Frisky Foal supplement and access to water at all times. They checked everything for mold after she fell ill, but everything appeared clean.
Pasture: out 24/7. It is very cold here, but they do have a windbreak.
Condition: weight good, no ribs, little bit of a hay belly, good thick healthy winter coat, she was 14 1/2 hands high at seven months. She was beautiful.
Voiding and stooling patterns normal, even up to the night she died.
Do you have any theories or insight as to what might have happened? I am too stunned to even try to think things through.
Thanks in advance,
Deanna

How heartbreaking, Deanna. I'm so very sorry for you. Do you know if the esophagus was examined?

Hello Deanna,
My condolences. I am afraid the report at the rendering plant really does not help much. Unless there was a perforating hole and peritonitis, the stomach lesions are unlikely to be the cause of death and the cause of the appearance unknown.

Thanks, Dr. O. I figured as much, but thought it was worth a try.

Hi Elizabeth, from what I gather, the rest of the intestinal tract was normal, only the stomach showed pathology. Or so the guy at the rendering plant says. (Can you tell I am a little ticked that a proper post-mortem wasn't done??)Where you speculating perhaps she ingested a corrosive of some description?

Yeah....sometimes they're like little kids...every once in a while you see a foal that just has to sample everything. Once again, I'm so sorry...especially for the frustration you'll be dealing with....
