However, in the very next statement you say, "Many parasitologists believe that rotating products every deworming worsens the resistance problem". Could you clarify whether or not dewormers should be rotated, and if so how often? We have a person in our barn that insists on worming every six weeks. This is not to combat an acute problem, it is her normal management program. She is rotating the wormers and since she is new to our barn she says she is going to hand graze her horse, and not turn him out in common pastures. I have been told in the past that worming this much is detrimental to dewormer resistance. Do you see a problem with deworming this much? She has also mentioned that she thinks it is best to give a double dose of strongid twice a year (once in spring and once in fall)as opposed to once a year as you have suggested. Do you see a problem with this, and is it necessary? The rest of us are in the process of trying to establish a set program for all of the horses in the barn. We are in Germany, and the winters are not only freezing, but due to the ice/snow/rain and lack of sunlight (and thus grass) the horses are not turned out at all from late November until March. How often would you suggest we worm the horses, and when is the best time of year to give the double dose of strongid? Thanks, Stephanie |

Yearly rotational programs are recommended. You will find examples of this in our deworming programs at bottom of the article. I really cannot evaluate what she is doing without a list of the products she is using and fecals run on hers and everones horses. But I do not think this is likely to be a problem for you in the next couple of decades, resistance is a very long term problem. The article gives you instructions for 4 deworming programs at the bottom Stephanie, one of which should fit your management scheme, check out the one entitled What the Experts Recommend. When to give the double dose of Strongid for tapes is explained under the heading Strongid and "Rotectin 2" pastes. DrO |
