Hello, I have a 15 year old Thoroughbred mare that was previously a successful brood mare but in the last couple of years has had difficulty getting pregnant. She finally became pregnant with twins but aborted both shortly after. What are the chances she will get pregnant again? And if she does, what are the chances she will either conceive twins or even be able to carry a single foal to term? Any suggestions?

Without a thorough exam I could not tell you what the chances she will become pregnant are but mares that produce twins have a higher incidence of later twinning. I can tell you how to manage mares of lowered fertility and those that produce twins. See the article associated with this forum (» Equine Diseases » Reproductive Diseases » Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility » Mare Infertility Diagnosis: cycles but does not settle) and also the article on twinning: (» Equine Diseases » Reproductive Diseases » Problems Keeping Mares Pregnant » Twinning & Management of Twins). Dear Dr. O. Thank you very much for your reply. I am reading through all of the articles you have suggested and am getting a much better understanding than I had before. I have to tell you that this website is really great and it's nice to have someone to as questions to before going to the expense of calling in a vet for something that isn't necessary (like the questions I asked of you).
