One of my foals which is now 9 months old has a small hard lump on her shoulder it has a red fleshy top on it ans is made up of a blacky grey coloured skin. Could this be a sarcoid starting to form? Thanks

I am afraid your description might fit many conditions. We have an article that describes several different lumps and bumps including sarcoids and then the sarcoid article gives descriptions of several types of sarcoids. Check out these two articles and see if anything looks familiar. DrO

Hi, No definitely not a sarcoid. Have been examining her all over and for some reason she has red sores all under her long winter coat. Strange? So don`t know what this is but definetly not sarcoids. It is also only on her body area in general not legs or head. Any ideas? Thanks

I am afraid your description still might fit many conditions. Sounds like it is time to check out, » Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin. DrO

My 14 yr old Arabian Gelding has a large mass at his right elbow. The skin at the site was rough, as was his left elbow and chest, with a few little scratches or small scabs. However, this mass is solid, can be palpated without any discomfort and is about 3 inches in diameter, though somewhat oval shaped. What am I dealing with? Kathy

We can only guess Kathy, It sounds like a scarred or callosed areas from where he lays on the ground that became a boil that has further fibrosed in leaving a solid mass. Usually such lesions return if removed but once your vet looks at it he can give you a better idea. DrO
