Posted on Sunday, Mar 9, 2003 - 11:34 am: My 3 week old colt was first put on LS50 mix on the 5th, he hasnt gotten any better so we (vets) now put him on Naxel and Trienamine with sulfa tablets if I wanted on the 8th. He has a gurgle sound when he breaths but both vet checks said his lungs sound clear. Temp was 102 for the first couple of days but has came down. His eyes appear a little out of it, but he still runs around and act "normal". Another problem I find is that he eats like a pig, half the time the milk goes in the other nostril, making him cough more and then he has the DrOll like you would see Hooch do on "Turner and Hooch". They have not done any type of "tests" just his Heart rate, Temp. The snot is usually cloudy white, (could be the milk sometimes). Any other suggestions on what we can possilby look for? Thanks Carrie |

You need to be looking for defects in the palate that may be allowing milk to run into the nasal passages. I think this guy needs a thorough physical and possibly radiographs and endoscopic exam to rule out these defects. DrO |

He is still gurgling, hardly any discharge from his nose now, he still has ALLOT of DrOol coming from his mouth, and one lip all most looks snarly kinda swollen. Could this be a allergic reaction to something? He of course nibbles on the hay and a few chomps of his moms grain that has mare and foal in it.Thanks Carrie |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 12, 2003 - 9:07 pm: Conclusion we hope. The main Vet came out on Tues and gave us his opn. He believed when the foal was born (-8) that he mayhave frozen is nasal passages, thus this crud is all stuck up in his head like a big sinus blob. The stuck a hose up his nostril and brought out some light yellowish puss. The DrOoling was from not being able to breath that good from his nostrils, thus the DrOol. They took blood for white blood cell count and it came back normal, temp normal and his resp normal. The one vet was the one who did the foal check on him at a day old and could not believe his size already...around 300 pounds and frisky. So hopefully the Trienamine will help with this problem. Currently stalled so he doesnt run around and agravate his condition.Any other comments about this would be appreciated. (vet said he has seen this type of condition with horse's that went through a fire) Thanks again, Carrie |
