My 20 yo mare is wondering if she needs to wear her raggedy Boett PJ again this year, ;O)

Best to get the PJs back out Chris. The flax study from Canada was interesting but they used the results of intradermal testing to measure results. That report was shortly followed by another report about the inadequacies of intradermal testing. We have reported on the flax issue before and if I remember right you have tried this already?

If you are really motivated you might try and get your vet to contact the person at Texas (name in the article under the Scientific Reports) to see if they might let go of the product used and the protocol for hyposensitization.

I supplemented with flax last summer. I can't say it was a cure. But she looked great, GRIN. I think I read the flax supplementation is supposed to be helpful for arthritis, too. So, since it is fairly cheap (compared to my entire horse bill), I decided to put her back on it.

I did my yearly google search and didn't turn up anything remarkably new ...

One thing I found suggested a conventional mineral supplement (such as Equi-Min). Another suggested Bug Check which is a combination bug repellent one feeds. It has garlic, grapeseed extract, diatomaceous (sp?) earth, and, hmm, I forget. Apparently it has received some award ...

I have seen reference to a culicoides midge homeopathic remedy in several places, but haven't found it to purchase.

My experience with the garlic powder from Springtime was negatory - no help, big stink in barn, caked up.

It seems to me the insects are out already up our way - normally I don't need the PJ until May - I may need to put it on her by the end of March. Time to start stitching up the holes.

Also have seen TONS of mosquitoes already. Get the Deet out.

Thanks Dr. O!

Chris,
Can you tell me where to get PJs? Do they cover the neck too? My old gals turned themselves inside out last year (and rubbed out 6" of mane!) I tried everything under the sun. I would love to give them some relief.

Thanks.

Hi Kerry,

I found my set second hand.

There is a distributor in the US.

For more information you can check:

https://www.sweet-itch.com/
https://www.boett.com/index2_eng.htm
https://www.tekstotaal.com/itchinfo.html

Boett is the company in Sweden. A number of Icelandics have this problem.

HTH.

Kerry,

I was sort of eyeing up the "Dustbuster Plus" as a replacement of my horse's Boett PJ. The best price I've found is here:

https://www.smartpakequine.com/prodcompare.asp?CATID=1997690968

I've not seen the Dustbuster Plus or the Flybuster (best price at bitnspur.com for $99) but I wonder if they'd do a good job against gnats and hold up.

What do you thing?

Well Chris,
I have to say I love anything that says it will groom my horse for me while I lounge (G)...but one of my mare's main problem spots is right in front of (and including) her bag, she needs those leg slots that the Boett appears to have for extra protection! There is mention about three surcingles. I wonder if my mares could get that off--it looks like a cooler which is never a match for a clever Arab. Although, it does look like it would be more comfortable to wear in hot weather! Hmmm Since I have three horses who suffer (all relatives) it might be worth a try. I do like the totally goofy look of the Boett for some reason -- a little like dressing my cat in doll clothes. Thanks for thinking of us in the swamplands!
