I have a 20 yr. old mare who has Cushings/Hypothyroidism. Her ACTH came back normal,T-4 normal, insulin slightly elevated. I'm told normal range is 3-30. Her's is 38. Dr. Kellon do you consider this high, not high, what is the dangerous range for insulin. She is on 1-1/2 gms of Pergolide, 1-1/2 scoops of Thyro L. And seems to be doing well, tho not shedding as quickly as she has in past. Thanks for your response and anyone elses. Shirley

Elevated insulin levels are not dangerous in themselves, Shirley. They are an indication of type 2 diabetes, where the tissues are resistant to normal levels of insulin. Probably more important are the glucose levels, the result of proper insulin function. We have very current informaiton on monitoring Cushinoid Horses and information you might find interesting on Hypothyroidism. Just back up to the Endocrine Disorder page (You can use the navigation bar at the top of this frame) and select the appropriated articles. DrO

Dear Dr. O, Thanks for the info, and I apologize for calling you by the wrong name. Shame on me. Dr. Kellon is part of the Cushing's "hotline". Sorry. Shirl
