Our 12 year old TB/percheron has somehow injured her fetlock - probably frolicking in the mud! We think she injured herself on Tuesday - we started icing on Wednesday evening when we discovered the problem. It is now Friday evening and she has been iced twice a day and pressure wrapped. She has also been given 1 g of bute yesterday and today and is confined to a smaller paddock. There is still some heat and swelling, but it seems to be going down a bit. She was reluctant to put much weight on initially, but is now standing on it quite freely, and allowing us to lift her opposite foot to clean it. My thought is to continue this treatment until Sunday and if there is still heat and swelling call the vet on Monday a.m. Would this be appropriate?

Hello Janis,
the problem is that the only thing I know is what you tell me and what if you have missed an important detail? From your description, I don't see a problem waiting but here is the rule by which you decide: If you understand what is going on from all standpoints and can handle those conditions it is safe to continue to treat. If you are unsure or what is going on you need help.

There are several possiblities here that worry me with the number one being infection, particularly in the joint. This would require quick appropriate therapy to insure permanent damage is not done.

Just thought I would update you - we iced the fetlock twice a day for 4 days, called vet but he was extremely busy and shorthanded so had a phone consult. Continued to wrap for one week, then started wrapping half days and have gradually been stretching the time between wrapping. One week after the injury she trotted sound on a straight line. The vet is coming on Wednesday (which will be two weeks) and I will have him give her a check then just to make sure that everything it tickety-boo.
