The vet x-rayed the lumps on my 13-yr old thoroughbred mare's neck at the nuchal ligament and says she has osteochonDrOma, and that it is "a little" malignant. He recommends leaving the lumps in the hope they will not grow any further, x-raying again in 6 months, and removing them if they are bigger. The worst thing is that he says, as they are on either side of the ligament,he will have to cut through it, which will leave her with crooked head carriage. My question is whether there is any other way to remove the tumour which will not interfere with the ligament? Cutting through it sounds nightmarish!

Hello Lynn, For everyone who does not know a osteochonDrOma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm that consists of a pedicle of normal bone (protruding from the cortex) covered with a rim of proliferating cartilage cells; may originate from any bone that is preformed in cartilage, but is most frequent near the ends of long bones. Of course without examining the horse and radiographs I cannot be sure but it strikes me the surgery could be done fron the sides and by elevating the ligament off of the tumors that they could be removed without cutting into the nuchal ligament, at laest not in a major way. Perhaps having the radiographs reviewed by another surgeon would yield other opinions. DrO

DrO - seven months have passed, and I've now had the lump x-rayed and scanned by another vet, who says it is not an osteochonDrOma, but a hardened mass of scar tissue. He doesn't feel it's anything serious, so it's great news (if he's right!). I'd like your opinion but, as he sent me the x-rays and ultrasounds by email, I don't quite know how to post them here - would it be alright if I forwarded them to you by email?? Thanks!

Should I take that as a no?

Not at all Lynn, I would always respond either way but somehow I missed your first post. Rather than send them to a hack radiologist like me, better would be to send them with credentials. Send them to the nearest referral institution with a certified radiologist on staff: they will have far more experinence evaluating this than I. DrO
