Are the battery operated digital thermometers as accurate as the mercury thermometers? And how far into the horse do I need to put it for the most accurate reading? Thank you!

No they are not as accurate, though some feel they are good enough. Unfortunately heat apparently destroys them, so they always quit working after being on my truck more than a few days in the summer.

Dr O,
Are mercury thermometers still more accurate considering the improvements of technology.
I am about to order a thermometer and would like a recommendation if possible. Thank you.

I prefer mercury thermometers Ilona but have not seen a review of the use of digital thermometers in large animals since my last post.

I've been wondering the same thing, Ilona. When my mom was in the hospital, they were even using a thermometer that they just rubbed across her forehead. How great that would be for a horse!
