I'm in the UK and looking for a Haflinger mare to use for helping adults to learn how to relate to horses. In order to make sure the horse has a varied life and is good for beginners to work with I want to ride her myself too - schooling, dressage and jumping to the level of her capability. I've found a promising sounding mare - 11 years old, pure bred - but her owner says she roars when worked on the bit. One reference source I have looked at suggests this is a hereditary condition - she passed her Haflinger grading in the UK when she was younger, so am surprised by this. I've read the article and realise that if I do consider buying her, I will have to commission some veterinary time to check the level of the condition. It's an 800 mile round trip to go and see her (probably nothing in the US!), but there are not many Haflingers for sale in the UK. This mare is going to have to be fit to work - on the whole is it better not even to consider buying a horse that roars, whatever the price? I worry that if I see her I may start to compromise my thinking. Thanks for any advice.

AS explained in the article there are horses that make noise that are perfectly servicable. DrO
