Posted on Friday, Mar 23, 2007 - 4:17 pm: Dr.O,I was reading up on the latest Thoroughbred race news and read that a pair of twin fillies raced together at Santa Anita (both finished way back)..in the article on these two fillies there is the following statement which I thought interesting...and goes to proove just how ##@**&% unlucky I got with Toy Moon getting pregnant with twins: Dr. Matts Troedsson, a specialist in equine reproduction at the veterinarian school at the University of Minnesota, said in a 2001 article for The Horse that twins occur a little more commonly in Thoroughbreds than in other breeds; about 20% of ovulations in Thoroughbred mares are double ovulations. "Overall, the incidence of double ovulations is about 20%, half of which will result in a twin pregnancy by day 14," reported Troedsson. "If we calculate spontaneous reduction, we're left with an incidence of twin pregnancies between 2% and 5%. The majority of these cases end in abortion, with less than 1% giving birth to live foals." Geeze!! |

Posted on Sunday, Mar 25, 2007 - 11:46 am: Well, glad my post on odds drew some chuckles...you'd think with odds like that for twins, and that Toy Moon managed to beat those odds, that I'd win every lottery and bet in the country..hahaha!!Oh,well. Now I am paying attention to the early book odds on the Kentucky Derby...any of you follow the Triple Crown races? |

Baffert's horse, EZ Warrior is interesting and has a great pedigree. He's won the three races he's been in so far, but he hasn't raced for a month and has never gone longer than 6f, so I wonder if he can go the distance? |

Posted on Sunday, Mar 25, 2007 - 6:06 pm: Sara,I make the time....I get several newletters from the Bloodhorse web site (I also get the magazine) and also visit the DRF site (Daily Racing Form) and Let it Ride web site....I record as many prep races as I can, so I can watch the horses, see who is coming from way out of it, how each horse finishes up, watch their racing style ect. TB racing is in my blood, no getting away from that!! Yep, I like EZ Warrior...this last race he put in some amazing fractions, even for CA, but was so strong after the finish line and didn't turn a hair...Baffert is very high on this horse, and he should get the Derby distance easy. I am still trying to find my Derby Horse in the mix...there are a dozen that could win the big race....I am especially watching the colts that are coming from way out of it, or laying just off the pace...not too many horses can take the derby wire to wire, like Baffert's War Emblem did several years ago. Actually me Derby horse was injured and taken off training...Tiz Wonderful was the colt I picked last year for this year's Derby...a son of the wonderful Champion Tiz Now....so now I am sorting thru to find my horse. Love Street Sense...he & Any Given Saturday put in a thrilling stretch run recently, and off a long layoff, the 2 yr old Champion, Street Sense won by a nose...there's a 'jinx' with the 2 yr old Champions...we haven't had one win the Derby in many years...so there is this stupid jinx that no 2 yr old Champ can take the derby...but this 2 yr old Champion is special and his trainer is one of the greatest ever...Carl Nafzger, he trained Unbridled, who won the Derby. Also love Circular Quay, he comes from way out of it, Nobiz Like Showbiz is another special colt, but he has mental issues and not sure the chaos of derby day will help him much, Hard Spun is another I like. Stormello is a tough little colt, and may try a wire to wire in the Derby, Notional has a very strong closing kick, so like him...and now we have a newbie, Cobalt Blue (Owned by Merv Griffin) that looks good. Still too soon to narrow it down much...the past several years I had my derby horse picked months in advance...I seem to loose all logic at derby time and I let my heart lead me head...I get very emotional for thses big races...but, it's such fun to follow the colts and then pick one to root for come Derby Day. If you can, you might want to catch the Dubia World Cup on ABC, March 31st...we have some good ones running over there for their huge race weekend...last year's USA Horse of the Year, Invasor will run against a top class field from all over the World...it should be awesome. Gee, I bet Dr.O may not like us chit chatting here...we may have to move this thread to the off topic section...heehee!! |
