Dr. O, At your convenience, would you offer your opinion of whether you feel it is necessary to give Bute and Sulfa if the abscess is draining, is bandaged with Furizone/Epson Salts, soaked and re-bandaged? Thanks for your help. Shirl

Shirley, in a properly draining, uncomplicated solar abscess neither would be indicated nor speed up resolution. DrO

Sorry to ask once more, but because of my bad english I have to ask again: do you mean that giving bute and sulfa is unnecessary?

Minari, No "sorrys" necessary. I think what Dr. O is saying is: if the abscess has been opened and is draining from the sole with no other complications the horse should have relief from pain, so no need to Bute unless really uncomfortable for the first day or so. As long as the abscess is draining and is packed to keep germs/dirt out, the antibiotics are unnecessary. However; if you have doubts as each situation/horse is different, you should follow the advice of the vet that opened the abscess. If I'm wrong with any of this, Please Dr. O, correct me. Thanks, Shirl

Additional thought -- according to my Vet, antibiotics are not effective for infections that are within the hoof -- they do not reach that area effectively.

Antibiotics are just as effective for infections in the foot as elsewhere. What antibiotics are not very good at is assailing the infection in pocketed up abscesses as most often found in solar abscesses. DrO
