Dr. O,

My 23 yr old paint mare has a long time history of itchy skin, bumps and a general rash. It was a constant battle. I've been treating her with numerous topical medications, shampoos, etc. with no luck. Last June I bred her and she took but I didn't find out until she was 6 mons. (I previously posted that my vet said she wasn't pregnant, but she proved him wrong!) Over last summer her skin started getting better and better. I didn't change any thing in her diet or surroundings. I thought something was finally working to clear it up. I had an ultrasound at 6 months to prove to my vet she was pregnant. Her skin just got better and better. No itching, no bumps, totally cleared up. A beautiful shiny coat. My colt is almost 3 weeks and her skin problems are coming back. She's scratching herself so bad she's got sores.
Any suggestions? Could this be hormones? I don't want to give her anything internal while she's lactating. Do I have to get her pregnant again to clear her skin up?
Thanks,
Cece

The article associated with this forum covers most of the problems and how to diagnose and treat them, you may recognize your problem among them.

That said pregnancy does result in important hormonal shifts that may have protective effects against skin allergies. I don't know if it would happen again all you can do is try.
