Dr. O., can a clubby foot lead to navicular problems? Bilaterally?

Thanks, Cathy

Not usually: horses with club feet tend to have problems with bruising around the toe of the sole. Then again I would not use it to rule it out either. The reason he is clubby is excessive pull on the DDF, this puts extra force on the navicular bone. The abnormal conformation may also cause stress on the surrounding ligaments, but I have to admit, I cannot remember a club foot with navicular synDrOme.

Thanks Dr. O, I do have a gelding with a clubby foot that has been diagnosed with bilateral navicular. Both navicular bones have an increase in the vascular channels since previous xrays of a year ago. The clubby foot is the worse of the two. Have tried corrective shoeing and isoxsuprene with little relief. Neurectomy at this point seems to be the ticket for him, he is only 9 years old.
