It's me again I posted somewhere else earlier about this mare but now the problem is different so I thought I'd better move the subject. Had my mare checked on 5/29 her last breed date was 5/8. Vet said pregnancy, Ultrasound said pregnancy, fluid where it tried to attatch. Vet said no uterine tone. Said she was losing it and to give her a Lutalyse shot. Gave shot on 5/28 today 6/3 still not in heat. Now what. My vet suggests if she hasn't come back in by this Thursday to give her another shot. Also said to start on Regumate 5-6 days post breeding. I know and have read so much about regumate vs. not that I'm not sure what to do. Would like to not spend all that money but don't want her empty. Her first and last foal was in 2000. After three years of trying to get her in foal with that one we finally tried Regumate and she got in foal, only had to use it for 45 days. Haven't tried to breed her again since then she is a 10 year old Arabian mare in good health. Any advice would be appreciated.

Your post is confusing: the ultrasound shows a pregnancy and the mare had not returned to heat so the vet recommends a shot of Lutalyse, which will cause abortion? I figure there is some miscommunication here. Concerning the use of Regumate we do not use it in the practice for the prevention of early pregnancy loss. You will find more on this in the Disease: Reproduction: Pregnancy Loss section and the Drugs: Reproduction: Regumate article. DrO

Ok the problem he said was that she had no tone when he checked her so he said she was trying to abort it herself, also seemed to think it was to small. I don't know why she wouldn't have tone that was my biggest question. He said it's a progesterone issue. I have read lots of stuff about the Regumate thing and didn't want to use it. So maybe I'll try not to.

If the veterinarian was correct, and the mare aborting, the lack of tone would be a normal response to returning to heat and yes, the progesterone would be going down and again this would be a normal response to returning to heat. DrO

Is it common for mares to have poor tone then at day 20/21 without aborting? She still hasn't returned to heat.

It depends on what you mean by poor tone, Michelle. I do not know what your vet felt and so am hesitant to "judge the judgemnt" so to speak. Mares get real firm around day 18 then begin to soften up a bit around again around day 20. IT is hard to justify giving lutalse to a mare with a vesicle that is anywhere near normal, there is a lot of variation in the normal. DrO
