Dear Dr. O: A boarder's horse was confined to stall rest by our vet two weeks ago on suspicion of deep digital flexor tendon problems in both LF and RF. The day after stall rest began, the farrier put bar shoes on the horse (some variety of navicular synDrOme suspected, but radiographs were inconclusive and ultrasound provided no definitive answer either). The horse immediately showed some improvement (difficult to guauge how much tho', given that the horse is confined). Yesterday the owner asked me to feel the horse's LF saying it felt cold. And sure enough, beginning about 1" above the fetlock joint, the horse's limb felt distinctly cool. The coolness increased as I ran my hand down the limb to the foot. The hoof was so cool as to give the impression the horse just stepped out of the 'fridge. I have not encountered this before and seek your advice. Thank you in advance! Loretta

I really do not think a transiently cool leg has much significance. A leg that remains cool, that is having lameness problems, may be having circulatory problems. Reported rarely in the hind legs secondary to clots lodged in the larger vessels (thrombus), I know of no such reports in the front legs. If it persists you may want to have your vet check it out.
