we have 20yr.old tb,broodmare, last 2 years she has aborted, & absorbed the fetus. 1st yr around 5 months and this last yr. at 8 months, we had her cultured for infection and bacteria, was negtive, bred to the same stallion (fresh semem) both years. My question could this be 2 separated issues or one of the same. She has had 6-8 foals in her lifetime, 2yrs. ago (on frozen semem) she had to have leg surgery, she was 5-6 months pregant, but went to term had a healthy foal, why did she keep this one and not the others, vet said she whould need to have a bibopsy. for another breeding. We whould like to get 1 more foal from her, but will the same thing happen again? Thanks

Welcome Lorna, were the foals necropsied? Besides a biopsy also be sure the cervix is carefully examined for scarring, see article for more on this. Without knowing why she aborted I cannot really offer you much helpful information about he chances she will do it again. The fact she has done this twice means it is more likely she will do this again but can she carry a foal to term will require either a diagnosis or continued attempts. Lastly you might consider trying another stallion if the exams finds no problems. DrO
