Hi, Dr. O. I have a gelding that is approx. 16 yrs. old. He is not shedding all his winter coat. He shed most of it but the last layer of fine hair is left. It is not coarse or spotty his whole body has it yet. I have considered cushings and he just don't fit the bill. I did have his insulin and glucose tested and a general wbc and all was perfectly normal. He is in good weight, I'd say a 5 on the scale. I have seen cushing horses and he doesn't look like them or act like them. I also had thyroid tested and was normal. I have never treated him for tapes and wondered if this could have something to do with it? If I double dose him and he has a great infestation can that cause a blockage? The weird thing about his hair that is left is it is fine and wispy not coarse and thick, he is in very good health, and I can see the shiny summer coat under it. He starting to get hot with the exra hair. He has never coliced (shoudn't have said that). I worm him every 2-3 mos. usually with Zimectrin. I would like to try the worming and if that don't work look further into cushings I guess. Just don't want to colic him doing it. Thanks

I don't think this is a big risk. If the tapes are that bad you can probably pick them up on fecal and if seen try a single dose of pyrantel then follow it up with a double dose several weeks later. DrO
