Dr. O., I've searched all areas, read all articles, which I appreciate very much, however I'd like to describe my horse's skin and see which you think it is. When I went out to see her yesterday, on her hip area, (and a few other areas) she had these scab edges sticking up,(somewhat like shingles on a wind driven roof) some nickel/dime size. When pulled off they are covered in hair, are dry underneath the scab, and on her there is new hair growth! Weird. On some the skin is bare, but not all. Of course she is itching and I'm keeping them covered the best I can with zinc oxide and Bucas Sheet at night. Before these scabs, or whatever they are appear, the hair feels bumpy and if you 'pick' at it, very scaley. Which is this? Last year it was more on her neck, and the raised spots were very long, narrow, like a pencil lead, before they scabed. This year seems to be more on her hind quarters, tho she does have a 'naked' spot or two on her withers. I'm puzzled. She's boarded, and we have her on hyDrOxazine which help is limited. She's also Cushings, so prednisolone not good to use, tho we had to last year. Any advice or thoughts on which this is? Thanks for your time.

Hello Shirley,
Look at the article on dermatophillus and see if this does not sound more like it.

Dr. O, Thanks for the information on Dermatophillus. Think I'll bath her with Nolvasan Scrub this week end. That would be good according to all the posts. One more question. Would this condition make them itch? Thanks again this is a wonderful site. Shirley

The commonly seen clincial signs are in the article on Dermatophillus Shirley. Be sure to read the article first and then the posts.
