We have a horse that is currently at MSU that was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He has colicked four times in the past two months and was diagnosed with a nephrosplenic entrapment. They don't seem to know a lot about this disease and I was wondering if anyone can tell me anymore about this disease and how it's treated. I've been told that hay could be the problem and the horse is currently being given steroids and equine senior. Can horses recovery from this and was is the long-term prognosis. At this point, we just want the horse to be able to live in a pasture and eat normal hay and grass.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. Unfortunately, they have not given us much more at this point, but said they'd do some further research and get back to us. In the meantime, they are feeding him Equine Senior only and he's is getting steroid treatments. The horse does not have issues with diarrhea, but rather has colicking due to impaction multiple times. From everything I've read horses do not typically survive from this and those that do have a very restrictive diet and lifestyle. Can you recommend any good references for this disease. We'd like to learn more if possible.

Christina, since we do not know what disease your horse is suffering from we really can't provide much specific information. Inflammatory bowel disease is not a diagnosis, it is a description of a disease process that has many causes. For instance let say you have a "inflammatory respiratory disease". This could range from a mild virus (cold), severe bacterial pneumonia, or cancer of the lungs. These are all inflammatory respiratory diseases but much different in treatment or prognosis. Not knowing what is going on makes it hard to comment but most properly treated inflammatory bowel diseases, like most inflammatory respiratory disease, have a fair to good prognosis. DrO
