Dr. O, I posted this message earlier, but I am not so sure that I did it the right way. If this is repetitive, I'm sorry. I was writing to inquire about saddle thrombus. My 20 year old retired show jumper was diagnosed with the condition a month ago. He was experiencing severe muscle trembles behind and significant pain. He was lying down a lot when he could not handle the pain, but he would get up when he felt better. He was treated with Heparin, Aspirin, and banamine. He wasn't showing many signs of improvement, so we put him out. He developed severe swelling in his right hind and he was put on Dex and Ketofen. He slowly began improving and the thrombosis was subsiding. He stayed out all of the time unless it was too hot for him. As the thrombus left he developed choke. He is now on a NO solid diet. Three days ago, 4 weeks after the initial diagnosis, and 10 days after his symptoms had subsided, he began showing signs of thrombosis again. He is now in his stall (which is a double stall now) lying down a lot and trying to deal with the pain. I read the article about the condition, and it is the first bit of good information I have found. We have talked to 7 experienced vets and no one has seen or treated this before. I was trying to see if you had any more suggestions on the matter. Thankyou for your time. Natalie Pisano

Hello Gail, No I am afraid there are no practical solutions to this problem. If money is of no consequence and the clot visualized so it could be described accurately, I would speak to a human vascular surgeon about clot busting drugs or even surgery but these avenues are going to be very expensive. I'm sad to inform you that our amazing Wally was put down on Wed., July 16. On his last day he was having difficulty getting up and lying down. He could not getup from his paddock and we determined his time had come. I think that the saddle thrombus had killed the tissue in his legs and he had lost the ability to support himself. He is now at rest beside his paddock overlooking the ring he loved.
