Hi DrO Sorry this is in the wrong place. I was looking up info on hooves and just got impulsive and posted away..... My husband's horse was injected in his pasterns on 7/29. He was injected with a steriod and a little bit of antibiotics. This afternoon (7/30) we noticed it was wet on the back of both pasterns. It isn't blood but an orangish fluid (lymph?). He appears normal and sound otherwise. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks Barbara

I am clueless Barbara. This seems unlikely to be do to the injections or even coming from the horse itself, serum exudation through the skin is accompanied by other signs of inflamation like heat, swelling, and pain. Walked through a puddle of muddy water? Let us know what you find out. DrO

DrO I wiped them off at 6 PM and then at 9 PM checked and they were wet again. He went out yesterday for an hour and didn't run and it was dry. The weepage (or whatever it is) is drying and crusty on the back of the pasture but still wet on the outside, higher part of his pastern. It is on both pasterns. Here's a pic: ~Barbara

Barbra, Great picture. Your description and the picture pretty much nail it down to serum exudation. The skin looks irritated with a hairless area around the back over the tendon, could you be looking at an early case of grease heel? Or am I seeing this right? DrO

DrO Finally have a chance to get back here. After re-examining the area and how it progressed it is indeed grease heel and we are treating him. My husband was freaking out over the whole thing and wanted to ask every horse person in Ocala about it.... It's great we can post pictures...helps a lot. Thanks! ~Barbara
