My horse has had hock injections in the past - ~1/yr for about 3 years. I moved and finally got him to the university vet hospital (~ 1 1/2 yrs overdue). He didn't seem uncomfortable until now, which prompted the visit. In the past, the vet injected both hocks in the rear. The legs were not bandaged, nor was there ever any discharge. This hospital injected from the rear AND again near the front (I approved it). They wrapped some gauze/vet wrap around his joints. When we unloaded him from the trailer, there was some blood (~ 1/4 c?) that had pooled on the bottom of the trailer. I could not find any injection area that had any dried blood, nor any on his legs or hooves. The gauze under the vet wrap was bloody, though, nothing on the outside (could see a little seepage from under the vetwrap.) I think he is doing ok, but in retrospect, was the presence of blood odd? I still can't figure out where the pooled blood came from. Thanks!

Hello Nadia, For a description of what is injected where in the hock see References » Equine Illustrations » Leg Anatomy and Conformation » Hock: anatomy and intra-articular injections. The bleeding indicates that a larger vessel was punctured under the skin and is not a sign of problems. DrO

I'm glad that the bleeding was not a concern. Thanks, Dr O!
