Posted on Sunday, Sep 14, 2003 - 9:02 am: Dear Dr. O:My Morgan gelding was diagnosed with a stone bruise of the right foot after coming up suddenly lame for no apparant reason. He has never ever had a lamness issue of any kind. We did soaking, poulticing and bute for 5 days, and he was no better and no worse. The vet said to give it time, these things are frustrating. The horse became suddently worse 10 days later, an emergency vet was called and x-rays of of the right foot revealed founder with rotation, and laminitis of the left foot. The usual treatment of isox. banamine and bute was begun. Corrective shoeing in terms of a frog cusion and pads was done, with squaring and rocking the toes, but no bar shoes of any kind were applied per the vets instructions. I have not been able to get an answer from the farrier as to why not. Our usual vet came out to reassess my horse and review the x-rays and disagrees with the initial diagnosis, stating he is not "convinced" it was a case of founder, and in his opinion, the x-rays do not show anything. He has been our vet for 15 years, did my horse's prepurchase exam, and is a vet for the USET and Olympic horses. But I am totally confused. Do I need a third opinion? As of last week, he was walking better, turning slighly bettern, but was still off if he tried to trot. Mentally, he is not depressed anymore and his is his usual spirited self. My usual vet said that it was just as well bar shoes were not applied because if they are not done correctly we could end up with more serioius problems. He said to leave the horse on the current regime, and we are now tapering off the isox and bute, and the banamine is finished. Any adivce you could give me would be greatly appreciated especially concerning where to go from here and regarding corrective shoeing. Thank you. |

For our recommedations on treating founder see the article associated with this forum, we would not have put on a bar shoe either.DrO |
