Hi Dr O My friends 5yo warmblood mare was suspected of having a virus, being lethargic with a snotty nose so called the vet to assess her and do a bloodtest. However (my friend wasn't there at the time)the vet asked to see the horse lunged by the yard staff and diagnosed a detached suspensory ligament in the offhind and is talking of 18months box rest to be hacking sound or euthanasia. A bit of a shock as you can imagine as the horse isn't lame and there is no heat or swelling or pain on palpation, but she had started to show a shortened stride on that leg.The vet plans to confirm her diagnosis through ultrasound this week and has told my friend that she should have expected something like this as the horse has very straight hocks. My question is, does this sound a reasonable diagnosis (subject to the utrasound)given the absence of lameness etc, and if it does turn out to be this was it more likely to occur given her conformation and would it be wise to breed from her (she has very good bloodlines)?

Detached suspensory ligament with no lameness? Since we are getting this third hand I have to wonder if there is a mistake, but your friend should get a second opinion. DrO

Hi Dr O The horse has now been ultrasounded and the diagnosis clarified as a "stretched suspensory ligament" (is this proximal suspensory desmitis?)due to the upright hocks, probably having progressed over a long period, with the other leg likely to go the same way in due course

A ligament that is overstretched becomes inflammed so is a desmitis, your post is not clear about location. Without lameness I am unsure what is going on Anna-Marie, I still suggest that second opinion. DrO
