My 9 year old Spotted Saddle Horse has two pink spots on his feet. One is on a front foot and one on the back. The spots are about the size of a nickle. There is no heat nor soreness that I can detect and no lameness. The spots have grown out about 1 inch from the band. Another gelding has pink rings around all four feet. His growth is about 1 inch down from the band as well. I just moved my horse in May to a new facility. This spring the paddock was very rich in clover and both of these horses had access to it. Could clover be the cause? I don't know if it is even anything to be concerned about but I would like to know what it is. Any thoughts?

Horses frequently pick up what appear to be bruises in the walls and soles of the hoof with no history of disease. You can only see these in white hooves and as long as there is no lameness or other sign of disease are not a big deal and will grow out. While food and environmentchanges do cause hoof rings I don't think they cause the bruised-appearing areas. DrO

Thanks for the info DrO. I just joined the Advisor and already feel I got my money's worth. I am planning a weekend trail ride and can feel comfortable taking Max.

Dr.O, is it true that if the coffin bone is rotating or some other kind of change in side the hoof.. will it show as a pink 'bruise' on the outside hoof wall..??? ex. if a horse has been off several months with no apparent reason other then sore feet... then becomes sound one day.. months later there are pink 'bruise' marks where the tip of the coffin bone might be.. thanks Ann

Yes, but horses like this have a history of disease (lameness). DrO
