We have had a few race horses perform poorly. They have come back to the barn with ruby red lips and tongue. Also the inside of their eyelids were bright red. Any suggestions as to cause?

Bright red mucous membranes represent peripheral vasodialation. This could be caused by viruses, toxins, or pharmocological agents that effect the very small arteries. The fact that several horses are affected also support toxin / infection. Best at this point is to get the vet in to do a complete physical, review what the horses are being exposed to, and perhaps will be able to turn up the problem. In the mean time I would allow those affected to rest.
