I have read the article on swollen limbs and wondered if a flu/rhino booster could cause swelling in the rear ankles (there was a line in the article relating strangles vaccine to swelling that made me think it could possible apply to other events that stimulate the immune system). OUr two year old arab was vaccinated on Wednesday and spent all day in the barn today due to Isabel and I noticed he is swollen, but not hot or painful, in one rear ankle and just slightly swollen in the other. Thanks.

It is possible Shari but as the article states, so are many many other causes. I suspect without Isabel there would have been no noticable swelling. DrO

Dr. O. I just have to say that this site is the BEST thing I have come across in a long time. In the few short weeks I have been a member, I have learned more about horse care than in the forty plus years that I have lived with them. Reading new materials and new posts is the one thing I make time for every day - no matter how crazy my schedule. The cost of membership is absolutely worth every penny and more. I have been recommending it to everyone I know who has horses. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Shari RObertson (fondly referred to as "Dr. R" in my professional arena!)

Nope thanks! Here I don't have to be the expert -so I'll just stick with Shari - horse and kid mom! Thanks again for your willingness to share your expertise (and with such patience and good humor) with all of us. (By the way, the ankles are fine now - swelling disappeared after about an hour back out in the pasture).

Hi Shari - Just thought I'd let you know that I have a gelding who would swell/stock up behind every time he received his flu/rhino booster. Sometimes his sheath would swell as well. Vet started giving him a shot of Banamine with his vaccinations & it stopped happening. Without the Banamine, the swelling would go away on its own within 24 hours, but he looked uncomfortable (or perhaps I just felt uncomfortable looking at him like that - lol!).

Thanks Bonita! I have a feeling this little guy is going to be one of those who makes horse ownership a bit of a challenge - he is like a walking train wreck. Good thing he has such a winning personality and fabulous good looks (kind of how I fell for my husband....lol!) Thanks for the info. Shari
