Hi, Awesome O, hope I'm not overusing my subscription! But I really appreciate your straightforward, knowledgeable advice. Kirei, my 3 1/2 year old paint has a moderate form of UPF. I haven't had it diagnosed, but after all the reading I've done, I'm sure that's what it is. I will have the vet out to evaluate her, but in the meantime, I have two questions which I haven't found answers to: 1) Will the UPF cause damage to the joint/ligament if it's not treated? Arthritis? and, 2)Is it possible that the ligament is just too tight and perhaps some manual stretching of the hind leg would help? If so, what stretching excercises would you recommend? There were some encouraging posts about excercise, which I've been doing. It only seems to show up early in the morning after she's been corraled all night, before she's had time to stretch and move around. It does work itself out after some walking/trotting, but Kirei seems reluctant to stretch out fully (when I'm riding her) even when it goes away. Again, thanks! Jeani.

Sorry, that's UFP, not UPF up above (Upward fixation of the Patella) Jeani.

I am sorry for the delay here Jeani, I somehow missed you on Saturday. Lets see, 1) If the catching is severe I have seen permanant lameness result when not treated. Mild to moderate occasional catching probably not. 2) I know of no work suggesting manual manipulation will help but it won't hurt either. DrO

Thanks Drawesome, I've been gone for awhile... This mare has one of the best minds in the world, and is a kind sweethart to match. I'm not going to mess around with it, but see if I can get a good eval and see if cutting a split in that ligament will benefit her. Jeani.
