My neighbor has a 24 year old QH gelding that has been down for 36 hours. We are turning him over every 30 minutes. His appetite is good. He is eating, drinking and has had bowel movements. The vet. came out2 days ago and gave him antibiotics and steroids. His opinion is West Nile. In reading the articles about WN, I would not think his appetite would be good. He is also very alert. The vet came back out today and gave more steroids, antibiotics, vitamins, and ran an iv with dmso. He did also give a shot of banomien for pain. The gelding can not get his hind legs underneath him in order to get up. We have also been moving his legs, to keep the stiffness down. He has been running a fever between 102 and 103. The fever has broke within the last hour. Is there any suggestions of what else we can do? What are the chances of getting him up after he has been down so long. I do apologize for the spelling, it has been a long couple of days. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Carol it sounds like you are already doing about all that you can. I find the prognosis of these older horses with acute loss of strength and coordination in the back legs is poor and usually do not allow the situration to go on longer than 2 or 3 days. Really it is just time after all the treatments that are being given, to see if strength will return since we really do not know what the problem is. DrO
