My two year old was recently diagnosed with a mild case of WLD on his forefoot that has two thin vertical cracks up the mid-front of the hoof wall. His other foot also has similar cracks but no detectable WLD as yet. Having read the article I have a few questions. Where does one obtain formaldehyde? I know that it is volatile and toxic so I imagine not easy to obtain. Is use of Nolvasan or Hibiclens useful in place of Betadine? Would they have longer disinfecting times than Betadine? How long does one treat? I'm assuming until the white chalky substance goes away? At least until next farrier's visit and more can be trimmed away? What about human anti-fungal preparations such as ointments or sprays for athlete's foot? If adviseable, are any ones apt to be better than others? Re the other foot with no visible (or audible) signs of WLD, should I be treating with similar solutions/ointments/etc. as one with diagnosis as a preventive measure? As always, thanks for the help, Fiona

Hello Fiona, Usually you will have to obtain formaldehyde from your veterinarian or possibly your farrier. It is in a farrier's product called Thrush-Buster for instance. But it is a bit pricy considering the size of the bottle and how cheap formaldehyde is. Yes it appears to me that the chlorhexidine does not evaporate as fast as the povidone and has at least as wide a spectrum of activity. Remembering that the abnormal areas are pared away you treat until they no longer form between trimmings. Though I would monitor them very closely I do not treat the normal feet and though I have treated multiple feet in a single horse, I have not had problems with normal feet becoming infected after beginning therapy. Dr.O...My farrier and I have followed procedure outlined above with WLD on a minimum to moderate case. I have the formaldehyde, and am easily treating once daily. The infected area is completely pared and trimmed away. Just want to confirm that I treat daily...until the next farrier visit in 6 weeks? Or just a few days or week? One hoof on one horse...thanks
