One week ago our horse was diagnosed with scratches has been on an antibiotic(Bactrim) and bute. We were using clorox water on the affected areas but yesterday we clipped his right rear where the scratches was and applied Desitin. We also applied Desitin to the right front where it was starting. I just received a phone call from the barn that all four legs are now swollen- as in double in size. He was looking better when we left yesterday. I don't know what to do. I can't get a hold of a vet, don't know if this is normal with scratches or not. He doesn't seem to be hurting. He is drinking a lot, eating well, and wants to be ridden. However, he is getting quite woolly for this time of the year. He is a 17 yo QH.
Two questions? Does scratches cause this kind of swelling, and if so, how long does it last?
Could it be something else?
Thank you,
Chris

Without seeing your swelling we cannot know if yours is typical for scraches but scratches can cause swelling and it will might persist until you get a handle on the treatment and prevention. For more on the clinical signs, alternative treatments, and additional management details see » Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Scratches, Grease Heel, Dew Poisoning, & Mud Fever.
