I recently took my horse out for a long awaited trail ride. We haven't been out and about for awhile. Between his lameness & mine, we just haven't had the chance. We both had a great time. When we got back to the barn, I did a cursory inspection of my horse, but didn't find anything unusual. A couple of days later I found what looked like a bite right above his stifle where the leg meets the body. I don't think it is a tick bite because it looks too large (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter), but I'm not sure. I did not find a tick attached. I cleaned the area with alcohol but otherwise didn't do anything. My questions are: 1. Do I need to do anything else to treat this bite? 2. If it is a tick bite, do I have to concern myself with Lime Disease? (I looked throughout this site, and didn't find anything. Am I searching in the wrong place?) 3. If Lime Disease is a real possibility, what symptoms should I look for? 4. Are there any other diseases or conditions I should be concerned about that are carried by ticks? Thanks.

Hello Andrea, as we often discuss Lyme disease in horse I suspect you are spelling it wrong in the search engine. Without looking at the wound we cannot know if it needs more care or not. I agree it is too large for a tick bite but important considerations are:- is there a full skin thickness wound
- is there swelling
- is there lameness
These are important considerations on the seriousness of the wound. DrO

Sigh, a college graduate and I can't spell Lyme!!! I guess I was having a Senior} moment or I would have caught that mistake...I'll check the website again...Thanks. I checked the wound last night and the swelling that I felt the other day has definitely diminished. He also went really well last night - no lameness. What do you mean by "full skin thickness wound"? Thanks again Dr. O.

That would be a wound that goes all the way through the skin. Characteristics of this are described in » Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds: First Aid Care. DrO
