My 5yo had an abscess that started at the sole at his heel and traveled to the coronet. It popped at the coronet and is 2.5 inches across the hairline (I guess it is called gravel at this point). The vet to find the opening at the sole and could not go deep enough so it could drain from the bottom.

It has been over 2 weeks since it opened at the top and he is still somewhat lame. I noticed in the article you recommend an "anti-biotic poultice"--are you familiar with the animalintex poultice? Would this be suitable or do you suggest something else.

The vet is scheduled to come out tomorrow to take xrays of the foot.

Once the gravel opens, how long should I expect before he returns to complete soundness?

Thanks.

What is in this poltice Leah? The time to soundness varies tremendously and I have gone in and cleaned up some gravels a month after they popped and did not come sound.

We have exactly the same condition in my daughter's mare. Vet recommends soaking with epsom salts and then an animalintex poultice held on with duct tape and then cover it with an easy boot. Poultice is very expensive when you have to use a new one daily. Any other suggestions?

You can pack the wound with undiluted povidone (Betadine) soaked cotton. Other treatments for gravels are in the article associated with this forum as is a link to an article on how to bandage a foot.
