Just yesterday my yearling gelding had excessive gas. He was not rolling or thrashing but was laying down in the pasture and looking at his belly. This is very odd for him as he is always looking to eat. When I checked him and he stood up and I noticed his belly was pulled up by the flank but not twitching like Hypp. I listened to his belly by the flank and it was very very noisy. I gave him banamine and within 1/2 hour he was up again and eating.

I had been giving him hay that has 1.44 potassium in it and oats but it is last years hay and I wanted to mix it with this years so I don't run out and have to give him hay with higher potassium. The hay I was starting to mix in is 2.67 potassium and I was giving him 5 pounds of the old hay 1.44 and 1 pound of the new hay 2.67 plus 21/2 pounds of oats twice a day. After a few days he had the episode I discribed above. Could that have happened from too high potassium or was it gas from the new hay? I have known of hypp horses dying from colic but is it possible too much potassium caused the colic? He is extra sensitive to new grass as he had gas this spring twice and I had the Vet out for him? Does being Hypp n/h make him more prone to this problem?

Thank You
Lori

The clinical signs and response to treatment make this sound like a regular colic and probably not related to potassium. HYPP horses are at risk for increase of "colic like" symptoms but I don't think they are at increased risk for gas colic if on a fairly normal diet.
