Posted on Thursday, Nov 20, 2003 - 5:00 pm: Hi--for Dr. O and anyone interested, thought I'd give you my experience with UFP: I brought Kirei, my 3 1/2 year old QH mare to Colorado State University for a lameness exam (she had a mild/moderate case of UFP, which had improved with age, but I still had noticed some soreness.) The surgeon and head of the surgery/equine department there told me that personally,(barring causes such as a bone problem like an OCD.., etc.)he has yet to find a case that was NOT cured by proper exercise, even the more severe cases of UFP. This was encouraging to me and hope that this info helps others out there trying to decide how to go about treating UFP. Of course, proper diagnosis/evaluation and the amount of proper exercise is important. Jeani. |

Posted on Thursday, Nov 20, 2003 - 5:16 pm: By the way, Awesome O,Thank you for posting that the injectable iodine procedure is prohibited in certain registries. My hometown vet might have tried this on Kirei--(I'm not sure about that because I didn't go to him, but he had mentioned that this is the procedure he used for some cases of UFP) but at any rate, (after reading up on this website,) I realized that I wanted to avoid injecting iodine if possible, and this is what helped me to decide to go to CSU, where I am certain to have gotten the best advice around. Thanks, again, for a great website! Jeani. |

I have seen horses so badly hung up that they appear to have permanently damaged the stifle (desmitis> capsulitis> DJD) when immediate help and surgery was not done.DrO |

Also, to not be misleading I should mention that I am also going to inject her once a week, four weeks total with Adequan (IM), and a little bute each day for a week was recommended. Last but not least, you probably get tired of hearing this but, I can't believe how much I learn on your site. You are the bomb with aplomb! Jeani. |

Of Equine Practitioners meeting where I saw a review of the old MPL desmotomy (cut the ligament) in a large number of sport horses that had excellent long term outcome to achieve there intended purpose. The key: they were well rested following the surgery. I am not surprised considering my own experiences and it will be one of the first updates next month.DrO |

Posted on Monday, Mar 22, 2004 - 9:21 pm: Hi, Awesome O--Just looking for any updates on UFP--excersice helped some last November until snow hit, and there's been snow on the ground consistently enough that I had to quit for a few months. Now we're back to where we started. It makes me cringe to ride her, even lightly, although it's not so obvious watching her from the ground. Interestingly, the softer footing in the arena seems to enhance it. Any ideas? Thanks, Jeani. |

Posted on Monday, Mar 22, 2004 - 10:49 pm: Hi Jeani, For what it's worth, thought I'd add my most recent experience of UFP (having had a couple of cases). Last year my vet recommended the same treatment you got. I rode my 6 yr. old gelding on hills, mountains, mostly trotting, and did most of my cantering on the flat. He got better and I stopped the injections of generic adaquan. I am fortunate to ride at least a little during the winter...but this spring he was obviously bothered again. Just started the exercise routine and he is responding well and he stays outside 24/7. He shows only a slight hesitation now. Hope this is encouraging..I am so pleased that exercise was recommended and is working best. The long rests can be counteracted with exercise. |
