Posted on Wednesday, Nov 26, 2003 - 1:26 am: Does anyone know what could cause our mare to discharge a clear mucous substance as she begins to urinate. She has been at the vet's clinic and treated and had a uterine infusion,Penicillan injection, Gentocin, Saline procedure at the Vet and was discharged as clear for breeding however, she is still discharging this mucous as of today. I would appreciate any advice or any experience from anyone with a simular experience as we are planning to breed her the first of year. Thanks much in advance for any help. Barbara (Toad) |

This probably will require a physical and ultrasound exam conducted some time after a urination, so there is time for it to accumulate, and laboratory examination of a fresh collection of the material. In general clear mucous is not a problem but without looking at it myself I cannot be sure.DrO |

Posted on Saturday, Nov 29, 2003 - 9:18 pm: Thank you for your information, however she became very sick just after this was posted, and unfortunatly had to be euthanized after having to take her to vet. Hosp. due to blood test showing white count of over 30,000 with no response to IV antibotics for over 24 hrs. The vet found a mass about the size of a basket ball in the ultra sound and she was inpacted as well. I am having a blood test for Valley Fever done, but will not get results for two weeks. The vet feels that she suffered from any one of these three illness', Valley Fever, internalized Dry land, or Cancer, or a combination of these. Her Kidneys were shutting down, which is why I made the decission to have her euthanized. Is there any thought you have on this. I will post a copy of blood work when I get it. Thanks again for all your help.Barbara Hockemeyer |

Posted on Saturday, Nov 29, 2003 - 9:46 pm: My deep condolences Barbara. It does help to understand what happened. The WBC count by itself is not indicative of irreversible disease but the kidneys shutting down is not a good sign. We do have information on acute renal disease at » Equine Diseases » Urinary System » Kidney Disease and Failure in the Horse. Where was the ultrasounded mass found? I think a necropsy with careful examination of the mass and the kidney's would be most helpful.DrO |
