Hi DrO,

I read the discussion regarding hoof rings & quite honestly I believe the same as what everyone else posted - they can be caused by any degree of stress (change in feed, environment, trauma, illness, etc.)

But, I never heard of anyone referring to them as a form of laminitis until today. A lady who bought a gelding from me recently emailed me to let me know that her farrier pointed out his hoof ring(s). He referred to this as a form of laminitis and suggested she keep an eye on it.

I too have experienced hoof rings before, on many horses for many different reasons. All resulting in no other symptom or side effect & all grew out with the hoof. None of my experiences had lameness as a result, nor does the gelding she's referring to.

Is this actually a form of laminitis?

Thanks for your information,

Oops, I was given the wrong description - apparently it isn't hoof rings like what I was referring to, instead the farrier noticed a thin red line on the bottom of this geldings hoof.

What could that be? Could it be a little bruising due to the different conditions in his new home?

Thanks,

Lana it if very difficult to intrepret what you think your friend said about what the farrier saw. I mean this is third hand information, right?

Concerning roof rings: they are not a form of founder, they result from founder and yes there are many other causes. You will find a complete discussion explaining there origin at » Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Poor Horn Quality: problems with the wall and soles.

Red lines or reddish pinkish marks on the sole could be bruising as thats what my gelding has.

Thanks DrO & Katrina,

Yes, this is third hand information & very difficult to describe without seeing it first hand for myself.

I tend to agree with Katrina though, as I've seen bruising of the sole before too & this sounds similar!

Needless to say, she'll be keeping an eye on it & has full confidence in her farrier - between the two of them I'm sure he'll be fine. Besides, he's not showing any lameness, nor has he ever.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Take care,
