I am looking at a young (3yo) OTTB. The trainer thinks he had his joint injected once (with "acid") during his race career. I am curious, as it seems this can be common in race horses if something is just 'not quite right." I am familiar with injecting older campaigned horses for maintenance, however have been reluctant to consider young horses that have already had a joint injected. Would this automatically be a "red flag" or would you consider it a concern if the horse otherwise vetted sound and had no issues on xrays? Or is this just too vague to know?

It is not the injection that is a concern as it is "why" he was injected. See if you can get a trustworthy answer to this. If he passes a thorough vet check and there are no radiographic issues, it would not be a red flag for me. DrO

From what I was told, it wasn't for any reason in particular-he just wasn't racing well. I guess I will just have to decide whether it is worth investing in the vetting to see what is there. Thank you.

Leah, is there any way you could find out if this horse performed better after the hock injections. This might give you a clue as to what this horses' problem is. That is, if he has one. I guess a question to ask yourself is:, What do you intend on doing with this horse? That might help you in deciding whether the vet check is worth the investment or look elsewhere. The not racing well comment could indicate something more or nothing. There are some things that I can do well, but racing isn't one of them. Hope this helps. Susan B.
