Hi,
12/30/03 my yearling gelding wouldn't eat, drink and was depressed. I called the Vet and when he examined him he had a fever of 105. He started him on Penicillian and bute but the next day he was just as bad so I took him to the clinic.
They ran tests which showed his white blood count was very low, he had high muscle enzymes which they said could be from an Hypp attack and his potssium was normal. They kept him on the Penicillian and banimine until I took him home on 1/1/04 in the late afternoon and put him on bute and Tucoprim and I couldn't get his fever down so I gave him asprin along with the bute. The next day I was able to take him off the asprin as the bute was keeping his fever down.

On Thursaday 1/8/04 they took more blood and he is still on the Tucoprim but was going off the bute when his throatlatch, checks and under his throat/jaw was swollen. His halter didn't fit so I had the Vet come out again on Saturday as it was worse to include his muzzle area. She examined him and gave him a shot of Benadryl as she called it and packets of Azium for me to give him tonight along with the Tucoprim and the pills for Hypp horses which they started him on last week incase it was that. I am not to give him bute with the Azium and I have 3 packets. I am suppose to call tomorrow 1/12/04 on whether to continue the Tucoprim and get another can which will make it his third.
Also the blood they drew on Thursday his white blood count was normal, he is a little higher in muscle enzymes and his potassium is a little high. He is eating now and wasn't on the first blood testings.

What do you think and could all this be related to the same thing?

Thanks
Lori

Influenza can cause all these symptoms and lab changes. The head swelling is caused by the horse feeling bad and keeping his head down and a dependent edema developing.
