On Dec. 6th my horse cut her leg around the back and side of her ankle below the joint (it cut the coronary band). It was very deep-to the bone. Luckly she missed all of the tendons, so the vet sewed up her leg and put a cast on her to prevent her from putting her weight on the cut. Three weeks later he took off the cast and took some of the stiches out. He left some in because he was afraid it wasn't healed enough to hold shut. Two days later, she got out of her stall and tore two of the stitches out. He came back out and wrapped it so she couldn't move it much again. I left that on for a week and a half and after I took it off, she started limbing on it. By the time the vet came back out, she was hardly walking on it. It was infected. He drained it and told me to soak it in warm water with epson salts, give her a bute tablet two time a day, and he put her on Tucpan(spelling), an anitbiotic for a month. The first day before I soaked it I pulled out a piece of tacky pink and yellowish tissue. The second day the yellowish stuff ran down her hoof. I also pulled off some more tacky suff. I think she now has proud flesh because it is protruding out of the cut and not running out. It isn't tender on the cut but It is slightly tender next to it. The cut is only about an inch long. The ankle isn't swollen, but it is puffy next to the cut. I can't get hold of my vet because he went to a educational clinic until Tuesday. I was wondering if she has proud flesh is it holding the infection inside? She is walking fine on it now. Should I treat the proud flesh from the outside now or wait until I can talk to the vet? If I treat it from the outside, and it really should be cut off, will I ruin the chances of doing that? Is soaking her hoof in epson salts helping at all? Thanks for your time, Janet

If she is walking sound on it, it is unlikely that there is pocketed up infection. If proud flesh is a problem you can wait for your vet. In the mean time review the article on proud flesh associated with this forum. DrO
