I live in the northeast and we have been recently hit with a large ice/snow storm that dumped several inches of ice and snow in our area. Since the storm, my horse has been stiff and sore when working. He does warm out of stiffness after several minutes of work. I'm wondering if he is muscle sore because he is walking on ice. I know he hates anykind of slick footings and tends to tense his body when footing is less than ideal. He also comes in with huge ice packs underneath his feet even though he has pads. His movement outside is limited and he tends to stay in one place for much of the day. Anyone have a similar situation? I do have small caulks in his heels but I'm limited in size since he is turned out with other horses to prevent injury.

Sandy, Your horse may appear stiff because he/she is trying to balance with the slippery footing. Why he is staying in place for the day is because he knows better, sounds like a very smart horse! My advice to you is that you do not work him in your treacherous ground conditions to avoid injury. I know myself I tread carefully on slippery surfaces and may appear stiff to someone else watching. If you insist on keeping him excercised, try some walkies and chat time. Hope this helps. S.B.

I don't think walking on ice would make his muscles sore Sandy but a hard ground will certainly effect sensitive feet. I think Susan makes a good point also. DrO
