MY 8 YEAR OLD GELDING HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO WITH RIGHT DORSAL COLITIS. HE STARTED WITH PROJECTILE SCOURING AND STOPPED EATING. HE ALSO STARTED TO SWELL UNDER HIS BELLY AND SHEATH. SINCE HIS DIAGNOSIS, WE HAVE STARTED A MEDICAL REGIME OF EQUINE SENIOR, ALFALFA PELLETS, SINCE HE CANNOT HAVE HAY, RED CELL AND RATION PLUS. THE EDEMA HAS GONE DOWN, AND BLOOD TEST HAVE SHOWN THAT HIS PROTIEN LEVEL IS COMING BACK UP, HOWEVER, IS NOT WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I AM FACING IS THAT HE LOOKS LIKE A WALKING SKELETON. HE IS EATING HIS FEED, HE IS UP TO 2 SCOOPS TWICE A DAY, AND DAILY GRAZING, WITH HIS SUPPLEMENTS. HOWEVER, HE IS STILL SCOURING AND NOT SEEMING TO BE RETAINING ANY WEIGHT. IN FACT HE LOOKS LIKE HE IS STILL LOSING SOME. IS THERE ANY THING LIKE A FAT BUILDER OR SOMETHING I CAN GIVE HIM TO PUT SOME WEIGHT ON, I AM SO SCARED HE WILL JUST WAST AWAY. HIS EYES ARE BRIGHT AND HE DOSEN'T SEEM TO BE IN ANY PAIN. IT SOUNDS LIKE MALABSORPTION, INSTEAD OF HIS COLON. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WILL BENEFIT HIM? LOOKING FOR ADVISE.

Did you try a search on "diarrhea"? When I ran the search I found several recent discussions and an article that may answer some questions. Couldn't figure out how to give you the exact links since my browser gave me the same URL for all of the first ones and the discussions.

First Maurie you need to be very careful with the diet of this horses, changes should be made slowly and under the supervision of your vet. We have an article on refeeding emaciated horses but I would start with the "Thin Horse" section of the Care for Horses » Nutrition » Equine Nutrition an Overview of Feeding Horses article. It too has important information and links to the other pertinent articles. DrO

My condolences. It is even harder to lose them when they are so young. Lilo
