Dr. O---
I first wanted to update you and tell you that my horse who foundered the first part of January is doing quite well! We have been hand walking and are going to be adding some light longing to his routine. My horse before he foundered was diagnosed as hypothyroid last July. After he foundered we knew he needed to be checked for cushings. My vet did not want to do the dexamethasone am/pm test as it could trigger an acute case of founder. We found out that his cortisol levels were within normal limits, thyroid levels were WNL on his current dose of thyrol-L, but his insulin levels were 2-3x's that of a normal horse. My vet told me he has EMS. My horse has been put on 5gm chromium a day. Since he has been on the chromium--about 2 weeks--- the heat in his hooves are nearly gone, he is pain free and off of bute, and his digital pulses have been significantly reduced. OK,after all that--here's my question----I will be looking into a joint supplement to put him on again and I am having a tough time finding one that isn't in an alfalfa base or has sugars/fillers in them. Can a horse with EMS receive glucosamine or is that contraindicated? Do you have any suggestions? Have you or any of our members heard of Enflmx--by Pro-Formula Labs or Inflam Away Eq? Thanks!!!!!

That is great signe but it is unlikely the chromium that is doing this: it is all the other things you are doing concerning the treatment of founder and EMS. Though chromium is known to decrease insulin resistance the effect is very small and even hard to measure in human studies.

You hear that glucosamines are contraindicated in EMS patients but there is no proof and I think it unlikely, I would go ahead and use it.

I am having some great results with a product called Four Flex. It is in a stabilized rice bran base. I even have my dog on it. The ingredients per one ounce dose are:
Glucosamine Sulfate 5000 mg
MSM 5000 mg
Yucca 2500 mg
ChonDrOitin Sulfate 1200 mg
Vitamin C 1000 mg
Stabilized rice bran
