Hello Dr. O, I'm looking at a 2 year old offered for reduced price because she was a premie, and am wondering what long term effects being a premie might have on her soundness for riding. Her mother developed nocardia placentitis, but was able to successfully hang on to 303 days. The filly was born healthy at a university hospital and was handfed initially. She surprised everybody by standing and nursing on her own by 20 hours. The breeders monitored her joint development by x-ray from 3 days to 3 months and say they stayed strong, with no crushing. She did end up toed-in from the knee, but travels pretty straight. Should I expect long term issues, or at this point could I consider as if she'd had a normal start in life? thank you, Mary

Considering the previous care and monitoring if there are no health problems identified on a good physical exam I don't think increased problems are expected but we really do not know. Not enough of these type horses have been followed in a controlled manner. DrO
