I have a 9 year old Morgan who was diagnosed with stifle lock on his right hind. He is an upper level dressage horse and while he has never been "off" on that leg, it is definitely weaker and makes tracking to the left his more difficult side. In an effort to build up strength in that leg and his hind end overall, I walked him up a series of gradual hills and slopes for 15 minutes this past week. Then when I went to pick up the trot in the ring he was lame on that right hind. He has had a massage and the glute muscle was tight but not horrible on the right, and he is today sound at the walk but not the trot (4 days later). I am concerned that I may have injured his stifle but there is no heat, swelling or discomfort to palpitation. Is this too soon to tell what the problem is? Should I just continue to treat this as muscle soreness?

Hello Nauset79, It is not so much a time factor as it is a lack of information to blame the stifle. How to gather the necessary information is described in the article Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse. Since the cause of the lameness is unknown it is hard to give definitive advice as to how to handle the horse. We discuss the possibilities and a logical approach to managing the horse with a unidentified lameness in Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse. DrO
