Dr. O, Cody is my 18-19 year old quarter horse/? cross. He is around 15 hands, weighs 900 lbs. After seeking several opinions years ago, I finally found a vet who made me ride Cody. She said he has a clicking sound, and proceeded to cut the ligiment as described in your article. (1999 surgery) He was on 6 weeks stall rest, and really has done well. The last few years he is very stiff and when he runs, he swings out his back legs instead of bending them. He is really a pasture pal, but the best patient boy I own. He gets very anxious when we ride, or he even sees the saddle. I am sure it is because of pain. I have come up with my own treatment plan, An hour before we go for a ride, I give him 1 gm of bute, rub his stifle with liniment, and we don't do any big hills. He is comfortable and relaxed, as long as it is not too strenuous. } My question is, #1 Is there any supplement I could be adding to lubricate this joint to make him more comfortable over time. #2 Would injecting "legend or one of the other things I have heard about on this site be beneficial for him during the riding season. We rarely ride, maybe once a week or every 2 weeks. Thanks suz

From your post it is not certain the stifle is the problem but it is certainly plausible as is arthritis elsewhere at this age. There are nutraceuticals and medications that can help ameliorate the symptoms of arthritis and may even slow down the progress. You will find a overview of these medications at Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Joint, Bone, Ligament Diseases » Arthritis and DJD: An Overview. By following the links you can read in detail about the various treatments available to you. DrO
