Hello Dr. O,

My vet has had me cleaning/treating my horses thrushy hooves with HyDrOgen Peroxide. Do other horse owners use this and how might it work? It fizzes quite a bit in the sulcus and frog area.

I have heard of its use and there is a logic: the thrush organism is an anerobe and does not do well in heavily oxygenated environments like the peroxide provides. I have never seen a report on the effectiveness and one problem with peroxide is there is no persistant (residual) protection.

Hello Pam

I have used peroxide on several occasions when thrush threatens to start and it works quite web specially if you clean the hooves then pour the peroxide and let it do its fizz and the use gentian violet that has a more lasting effect.

Incidentally what has been most effective is to keep them in a clean dry bed, or grass, mud is bad news.

Best of luck
